Portrait of Rian Masterson, clinical psychologist

An English‑speaking psychologist in Boulogne‑Billancourt

I'm a clinical psychologist offering therapy in English for children, teenagers and adults, at a practice in Boulogne-Billancourt on the western edge of Paris, or by video. I grew up in France in an English-speaking family, so moving between two languages and two ways of doing things is familiar ground.

On the practice's Doctolib page, choose « consultation en anglais ». My slots are marked with a blue dot.

Who I see

Therapy in English, at any age

Children and teenagers

Individual and family sessions

Whether they attend a French, bilingual or international school, children of English-speaking families sometimes find it easier to talk in the language they use at home. Parents usually get in touch when something has shifted at school, at home or with friends. You don't need to know exactly what's wrong to book a first appointment.

With younger children, sessions also make use of play and drawing. Parents are involved in a way that suits the child's age and the situation.

Adults

Expats, international professionals, students

People come for many reasons: anxiety, a difficult period, a relationship, the strain of settling into a new country, or questions that are simply easier to explore in a first language. Some have just arrived; others have lived here for years and still think in English.

Athletes

Clinical sport psychology

I also work with amateur, competitive and elite athletes, in English or in French: returning from injury, confidence that comes and goes, pressure around competition, or transitions in a sporting career.

Why it matters

Your own language

A second language can work perfectly well at the office or at the school gate and still fall short when it comes to describing what you feel. Using the words you actually think in often makes it easier to put things into words, and to notice what's hard to say.

Living abroad brings its own set of questions: distance from family, a child growing up between two cultures, a career or a relationship built around a move. They can sit alongside whatever brings you to therapy, and they are part of what we can talk about.

My training is in clinical psychopathology, which gives a central place to listening and to each person's own history. I don't follow a single school of therapy: the pace and the approach are adapted to each person.

Practical

Seeing a psychologist in France

A few things that often surprise people who are new to the French system.

No referral needed

You can book a psychologist directly, for yourself or for your child, without going through a GP.

Psychologist or psychiatrist?

In France, psychologue is a protected title that requires a state-recognised master's degree. Psychologists don't prescribe medication; psychiatrists are medical doctors and can. If medication seems worth discussing, I can help you find the right professional.

Costs and insurance

Sessions are not reimbursed by the French national health system (Sécurité sociale), and I am not part of the Mon soutien psy scheme. Many mutuelles and international health plans cover part of the cost. It's worth checking your policy.

Confidentiality

Psychologists are bound by professional secrecy and the French Code of Ethics for Psychologists. For a minor, consent from those with parental authority is required, except where French law provides otherwise.

How to book

I see patients at the practice of Agnès Calenge Laprelle, a French-speaking clinical psychologist. Bookings go through her Doctolib page: choose « consultation en anglais » and look for the blue dot next to my name.

You can also call, email or use the contact form. I answer messages myself, and everything, from the first contact to the sessions and any written documents, can be in English.

The first session

It lasts about an hour and is a chance to get to know each other and talk through what brings you, the context, and what you hope for. For a child, this first meeting can be with the parents alone, with the child, or both. We decide together. There's nothing to prepare.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can everything be done in English?

Yes. The first contact, the sessions and any written documents can all be in English.

Are video sessions possible?

Yes, therapy sessions in English can take place by video when that suits the situation. Assessments for athletes under the French SMR framework are done in person.

My child switches between French and English. Which language should we use?

We choose together, with your child, based on the language they find it easiest to express themselves in. Sessions are possible in both.

Do you offer psychological assessments in English?

Not at the moment. The only assessments I currently carry out are those for athletes under the French regulatory medical monitoring framework (SMR).

Will my insurance cover the sessions?

The French national health system doesn't reimburse sessions with a psychologist in private practice outside the Mon soutien psy scheme, which I'm not part of. Many mutuelles and international insurers do cover part of the cost: check with yours before booking.
